			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- google_ad_section_start --><p>Let’s face it.  Omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids are essential to us humans, because our bodies cannot produce them.  For years, researchers have been working to identify the ideal intake of each of those nutrients.  That is an intake that would reduce our risk of chronic and life threatening illnesses.</p>
<p>At this point, most scientists agree that for every gram of omega-3 a person eats, he or she should eat no more than one to four grams of omega-6s.  That is a hard thing to accomplish, today.  Here’s why.</p>
<p>If you are like most people, you use a little vegetable oil or margarine for cooking, as a salad dressing or as a bread dip or spread.  If you are a health minded individual, you do that because you have been convinced that margarine or vegetable oils are better for your health than real butter.</p>
<p>While too much of any kind of fat in the diet could be bad, because it may contribute to obesity and heart disease, the fat in some kinds of margarines are trans-fatty acids.  They are synthetic creations and there has been a great deal of effort to have them banned from foods or, at least, reduced, because they may be carcinogenic.</p>
<p>When it comes to the omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids found in margarines and vegetable oils, the amount of each varies depending on the vegetable or seed from which the oil is derived.  Researchers say that we need to keep the intake balanced, as mentioned above, because too many omega-6s in the diet contributes to chronic inflammation which plays a role in cancer, heart disease and a variety of other illnesses.</p>
<p>The worst choice is probably corn oil.  If you are using corn oil for cooking or if you eat margarine created from it, you are getting 40 times more omega-6 than omega-3 fatty acids in every spoonful.  It would be difficult, if not impossible to balance that out.  There just aren’t many foods that contain only omega-3s and no 6s, which is what you would need to achieve a balance.</p>
<p>The best choices are canola and olive oils.  Flaxseed is another good choice, but it’s not really a food source, because of the strong taste.  As a dietary supplement, it’s “okay”, but it provides only alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.</p>
<p>DHA and EPA are believed to be the most beneficial of all of the omega-3 fatty acids.  The two are found together only in fish and fish oil supplements.  Marine algae can be used as a vegan source of DHA, but not EPA.</p>
<p>Some kinds of kelp can be eaten for their EPA content, but they contain only very small amounts.  So, you’d need to eat a lot of kelp to get 200mg, which research indicates is the minimum amount that people should get every day.</p>
<p>Now that you know this, cutting back on your intake of omega-6s while increasing your intake of omega-3 fatty acids could be the health boost that you body needs.  Only time will tell, of course, but it could help you live a longer life.</p>

Some foods in this classification are fried foods like french fries and donuts, pie crusts, stick margarine and shortening. Read packaging labels and try to avoid using this type as it raises your LDL (bad) cholesterol and lowers your HDL (good) cholesterol levels. Eating these increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association suggests that your limit the amount you eat to less than 1% of your total daily calories.</p>

<p>When we think of other essential nutrients, things like vitamin C and calcium, we know that they are found abundantly throughout nature in meats, dairy products, fruits and vegetables.  Vegans will argue that it is possible to live a relatively long and healthy life without consuming fish.  So, how could it be considered an essential food?</p>
<p>The real answer to these questions and others like them is this.  Scientists don’t know.  They have theories about the role that seafood played in evolution.  They have reason to believe that the nutrient would have been present in the food chain, in things other than fish and seafood, before modern farming and feeding practices began.</p>
<p>In order to feed the population explosion, it became necessary to mass produce food.  Shortly after the world wars and the Great Depression, it became obvious that food shortage was a problem and would become an even bigger problem in the future.</p>
<p>In order to feed nations of hungry people, we gave up most of the non-fish foods with DHA, without any body realizing it.  At that time, starvation and outright nutritional deficiency diseases were big problems, everywhere.  Not just in underdeveloped nations.  Before scientists could begin thinking about the “ideal” human diet, they had to be able to figure out how to feed the baby boomers and the rest of the planet.</p>
<p>Mass production made it possible to produce grains, fruits and vegetables more cheaply, while making cattle and poultry fatter, so that they would feed more people.  As time went by, food producers learned that it was safer to raise chickens indoors, away from viruses and other sources of infection.</p>
<p>They fed grain to all of the farm animals, rather than grass, because the animals became fatter and brought higher prices at market.  That is really what reduced the number of foods with DHA and probably led to what we refer to as modern-day health problems; increased incidences of heart disease, type II diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s and various kinds of cancer.</p>
<p>As the mainstream medical community and food manufacturers have finally accepted that DHA itself is essential and cannot be replaced by even high intakes of ALA, the omega-3 found in vegetable oils, we have begun to see a few fortified foods with DHA.  In addition to infant formulas and baby food, there are a few dairy products and other items that have been fortified with the nutrient.</p>

<p>The primary dietary source of Docosahexaenoic acid in the human diet is fish and seafood.  At one time, beef, poultry and eggs may have been a source of the nutrient, but as they have been taken off of grass and other greens, fed primarily corn and grain, the foods are no longer sources of the nutrient.  Any omega-3 that they contain is alpha-linolenic acid or ALA.</p>
