Fish Oil Therapy For Children Suffering Nervous Disorders

Omega3 fish oil supplements for children are becoming a very common therapy for children experiencing a number of nervous related effects. Lack of ability to concentrate, obsessive behavior and anxiety are some of the symptoms. Use of fish oils supplements high in Omega3 fatty acids are being used as a natural therapy to reduce and correct these symptoms without the side effects of pharmaceutical treatments.

These supplements are not a quick fix but rather a long term treatment. Results show themselves within a week to a month or longer depending on the deficiency within the child. But when applied as a long term dietary supplement the results are often quite dramatic. Ability to concentrate is improved. School grades improve. Obsessive behavior disappears entirely. Anxiety becomes a thing of the past. The child becomes more relaxed and able to handle life and it’s frustrations more easily.

Among the disorders for which supplements of fish oil is being recommended are: attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD) and autism.

One of the concerns most parents have about any medication is the side effects. Fish Oil supplements which are prepared by micro distillation are free of these side effects. The pollutants that are present in the raw fish oil are removed and the final product is entirely safe to consume, even for young children. Purification and concentration of the oil also means that the dosage does not have to be as high as for less concentrated products.

Omega3 fatty acid is an essential fatty acid. That means that cannot be manufactured by the human body but must be supplied by the diet. Naturally oily fish supply these oils. Populations who have fish as a major component of their diet have been shown to exhibit definite benefits from these fatty acids in their diet. Populations who have little or no fish in their diets have similarly been shown to lack these fatty acids and have a need to supplement their diets.

It should be noted that fish raised in farms are generally raised on pelleted food and have significantly lower levels of oil in their body. Fish which have had the opportunity to consume natural algae in the wild produce these fatty oils from the algae they consume.

Meats such as beef, pork which are commonly raised and fattened for consumption on a grain rather than a grass diet have been shown to be deficient in fatty acids. In contrast mutton which is generally raised on a grass diet has a higher content of fatty acids.

Other sources of Omega3 fatty acids are nuts and grains such as walnuts and flax seeds.

Many of us received cod liver oil or cod liver oil and malt by the table spoonful as children and probably didn’t appreciate the benefits of our parents or grandparents remedies. Now medical practitioners are recommending a modern more purified version of the same remedies.

The actual dosage required is still a point of discussion and parents should consult their pediatrician of general practitioner. Only purified fish oils should be used to avoid pollutants such as mercury and other heavy metals.
