How Does the Face Age?

The first signs of aging are usually found in the face.  Most individuals start noticing fine lines and wrinkles long before gray hairs start to make their appearance.  You may think that the introduction of lines and wrinkles is the first step in an inevitable decline to your appearance, and that you should simply resign to the fact of aging.

Accelerating and Preventing Aging

However, there are options available to replace the natural substances in your skin which cause the appearance of aging as they deplete.  As you age, the following begin to take place in your face:

  • Collagen becomes less elastic
  • Loss of facial fat or fullness
  • Tissue atrophy
  • Muscle laxity allows tissue to sag

Each of these contributes to the overall appearance of aging.  However, even these causes of wrinkles and drooping skin can be heightened or sped up by:

  • Smoking
  • Dehydration
  • Poor diet
  • Lack of exercise
  • Medication

In order for your skin to remain healthy for as long as possible, it requires a certain amount of nutrition, including water, and blood circulation.  If you have already begun to show signs of aging, however, there are options to restore your youthful appearance without having a facelift.

Injectable Fillers

Your entire face will not begin to show signs of aging overnight.  Most likely, you will first notice a few wrinkles around your eyes and mouth, and your nasolabial folds, the creases with mark the lines from the outside of your nose to the corners of your mouth, will deepen.  Many types of injectable facial fillers can be used to minimize or erase these lines:

  • Restylane®
  • Captique™
  • Hylaform
  • Cosmoderm®
  • Cosmoplast™
  • Radiesse®

You may need to be tested for allergies against some of these fillers, but others, like Restylane®, are comprised of hyaluronic acid, which occurs naturally in your skin, so is hypoallergenic.

Another filler, called Sculptra® is also used to help stimulate new growth in the cheeks and temples, to help return fullness to the skin to reduce the appearance of aging.

BOTOX®

Just as BOTOX® is one of the best-known types of facial filler, it is also very versatile.  BOTOX® can be used to minimize wrinkles and volume loss in your:

  • Forehead
  • Temples
  • Cheeks
  • Eye corners
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Lips
